Barney Frank: Republican Colleagues Have Mostly Ignored My Wedding

Date:

Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) is not expecting any wedding gifts from his Republican colleagues in Congress.

The retiring gay Congressman, who married his longtime partner last weekend, said Tuesday that « Mostly, the Republicans have ignored it. »

He said that a couple of Republicans congratulated him in private, but « there have been no negative comments and I think a few years ago, there would have been, » indicating there has been progress on same-sex marriage. « The climate is changing and opponents have realized that the country is moving beyond them. »

Frank, who spoke on « The Bill Press Show, » also said that coming out as gay and doing his part to « diminish that prejudice » was among his proudest accomplishments as a public official.

« I was the first member of congress in 1987 to volunteer that I was gay, » he said when asked what he was most proud of in his long career. He also cited his work for financial reform and defense of President Bill Clinton during impeachment proceedings.
