Senegal face Africa Cup of Nations coaching crisis

Date:

Senegal are facing a coaching crisis just weeks ahead of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Teranga Lions are one of the favourites to take the title but their coach Amara Traore is out of contract.
Now talks between the football federation (FSF) and the country’s sports ministry over a new deal have broken down.
As a result the publication of the squad for the Nations Cup has been delayed and two friendlies cancelled.
Traore’s deal expired on 15 December and he has been holding out for an improved contract after overseeing a smooth qualification campaign.

But the requested increase in his salary has been turned down by the sports ministry.
There is also a dispute between the FSF and the government over the amount of money set aside to fund Senegal’s campaign in Equtorial Guinea and Gabon.
The cancelled friendly matches were due to be against Sudan and Tunisia, which will have a knock-on effect on their preparations for the Nations Cup as well.
There have been calls for the country’s president to get involved to resolve the problems.
Senegal are in Group A of the tournament, alongside co-hosts Equatorial Guinea, who have their own coaching problems, plus Zambia and Libya.
