Awa Ndiaye, a State Minister in Senegal and her colleague Aminata Tall who is also Senegal’s current Secretary General Office of the President, have on Friday displayed a pitiful and unprecedented spectacle bound to remain in their country’s political history. In the very offices of Dakar’s Presidential Palace, Awa Ndiaye provoked and uttered displaced words directed to Aminata Tall who in turn slapped Awa Ndiaye. The two ladies consequently engaged in a battle before being separated by officials of the Palace.

An eyewitness who was among the officials who separated the two antagonistic Stateswomen during their battle said “Awa Ndiaye was used to uttering such inappropriate comments regarding Aminata Tall, the Secretary General Office of the President. Indeed, the relationship between these two ladies had become abhorrent since they were appointed to Dakar’s Sate House where each has an office. Their antagonism had become so apparent that everybody could sense it easily” our witness said.

It was already known to Senegalese people that the adversity between the two ladies dated far back as the origin of their political ambition. They began a battle of positioning from within the ruling Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS) particularly for the control of the liberal National Women’s Movement.  The animosity kept growing higher as the two eyed higher positions in Senegal’s state set up. As a mean to quickly achieve her aim, Awa Ndiaye openly claimed to be a friend to the Senegalese first lady and her son, Karim Wade, who is a super minister manning five portfolios. Since then, Awa Ndiaye never missed the chance to openly invite Karim Wade to succeed his father. Gossips at the Senegalese presidency went as far as labeling her “Karim Wade’s informer” in the Palace. For some reasons, Awa Ndiaye’s name was strongly mentioned by the well informed Senegalese media when President Wade took the decision to remove Aminata Tall’s signature and competences on certain issues. Therefore, many people in the ruling party foresaw this latest development as the climate went more deleterious within the PDS party and the cabinet.

The question now remains President Wade’s appreciation and attitude as regards this case that is described by Senegal’s cabinet members as “very serious”.  Meanwhile, the Senegalese President’s Adviser and Spokesman, Abdoulaye Bamba Ndiaye said the President has not yet reacted officially. Mr Ndiaye however revealed that “just a day before this incident, Abdoulaye Wade warned that he would no longer accept differences between government members and those who would be found wanting should get ready to leave the cabinet”.  Bamba Ndiaye further expressed regrets at the display of such a pitiful spectacle by top stateswomen. It should be noted that in 2009, Awa Ndiaye publicly provoked and fought with Aminata Lo Dieng, another lady who was the erstwhile Minister of Tourism, but strangely enough, Awa Ndiaye came out free of it with no sanction being opposed on her.
